James Armistead Lafayette


Following up on the History Channel episode "America: The Story of Us" we watched in class, it concluded with the decisive defeat of the British Army under the combined American/French forces led by George Washington and General Marquis de Lafayette. Intelligence, as mentioned early in the episode, was a key instrument Washington utilized to deceive British forces and win lopsided victories. This is especially evident at the Battle of Yorktown, where an African American spy by the name of James Armistead gathered crucial information from General Cornwallis which allowed Washington and Lafayette to trap the large British force in the southern port city.
